Public Grant Data, Made AI-Ready: Meet the Fluxx Open Exchange
4:49

Today we're introducing the Fluxx Open Exchange, a free, open service that lets any AI assistant research US public grant data.

With the Open Exchange, anyone can ask their AI assistant about nonprofits and funders from IRS records, Form 990 financials, grants made between organizations, IRS standing checks, and open federal and state funding opportunities. Funding opportunities are published on the CommonGrants open standard. There's no account to create, no API key to request and no cost.

For more than 15 years, Fluxx has worked alongside the funders and nonprofits that drive resources to their communities. Public grant information has always been available, but smaller organizations with fewer staff often find it hardest to use, even though they need it most.

Our vision is one where every organization, from a two-person nonprofit to a national foundation, has access to the same public information in the tools they already use. The Fluxx Open Exchange is for the whole sector, not just our customers.

Why it matters now

AI assistants are quickly becoming the place where people start their research, but public grant data hasn't been optimized for them.

Form 990 filings sit across millions of individual returns, published as scanned documents and complex XML files, and the IRS changes the form's structure almost every year. Researching a single funder can still take an afternoon across five websites, and the organizations with the least capacity feel that cost most.

AI assistants with web search can sometimes find an individual filing or a summary page. They can't reliably compare financials across years, trace grants between organizations, or combine that with open funding opportunities in a single answer.

The Fluxx Open Exchange does that work first. It organizes public grant data into one consistent structure, so any AI assistant can use it to answer real questions, with the source and as-of date on every record.

Open by design, built for AI

The Fluxx Open Exchange removes the barriers between people and public grant data. There's nothing to sign up for, nothing to pay and nothing new to learn.

  • Free to use: no account, no API key, no cost and no trial that expires
  • Works where you already work: Claude, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Cursor and any assistant that supports MCP connectors
  • Public and read-only: uses only public data and never touches any organization's private Fluxx data

Behind the scenes, the Fluxx Open Exchange does the hard part: reconciling public filings across years and formats so your AI assistant gets clean, consistent answers. Research that used to take hours of searching across various websites, now takes one question

  • Who's who: nonprofits and funders from IRS records
  • The money: Form 990 financials
  • Who funds whom: grants made from one organization to another
  • Due diligence: IRS standing checks
  • What's open now: federal and state funding opportunities, published on the CommonGrants open standard
  • Transparency built in: the source and as-of date on every record

The Fluxx Open Exchange is a research data source. It answers the questions you bring to your assistant, but it doesn't know anything about your organization, score fit or send alerts.

Built for the whole sector

The Fluxx Open Exchange is a public resource, open to every organization regardless of size, budget or whether it uses Fluxx.

  • Nonprofits: research funders who give to work like yours and review past giving, without paid tools or technical skill
  • Foundations and corporate funders: look at peer giving, spot funding gaps and check grantee standing in seconds
  • Government grant programs: make open federal and state opportunities easier to research, so more eligible organizations apply
  • Sector partners and associations: share a free resource with every member, whatever their budget
  • Developers and AI builders: build on a free, read-only MCP endpoint for US public grant data, on an open standard

Get started in one step

To connect, add https://open.fluxx.io/mcp as a connector in any AI assistant that supports MCP. Then ask your first question.

A few to try:

  • Which foundations have funded youth literacy programs in Ohio over the past three years?
  • How have this organization's revenue and expenses changed across its recent Form 990 filings?
  • Is this nonprofit currently in good standing with the IRS?
  • What open federal and state funding opportunities support rural health programs?

The Fluxx Open Exchange is free and always will be. Light fair-use limits keep it that way for everyone. Learn more at open.fluxx.io, including our fair use policy and privacy details.
